Owney the Traveling Dog visits Mrs. Sears' Class
at Callahan Elementary
Owney was a real dog that wandered into an Albany, New York, post office in 1888, more than one hundred years ago. The postal workers adopted him and let him sleep on the mailbags. One day Owney followed the scent of his mailbag and ended up on a train carrying the mail. For the next nine years Owney traveled all around the United States, and he even traveled around the world on a steamship. On his travels, Owney collected many tags and medals. He wore these on a special harness that was given to him by John Wanamaker, the Postmaster General of the United States. Owney was known as the unofficial mascot of the Railway Mail Service.

Our class joined mailing project where Owney the Traveling Dog will travel to as many states as possible. Each class that receives Owney will report back the happenings in their classroom and send a postcard to all the other classes participating in the project. This way every class learns about different places in the United States.
Our class received Owney on October 10th. We were so excited to have Owney. Owney was able to participate in our P.E. teacher's obstacle course and in The OREO Project hosted by Technospud. Of course, in addition to these special activities, we enjoyed just having Owney in the classroom.
Owney has moved on to another school participating in the project. We added a Florida pin to his vest and will be sending out postcards to other classes soon. Check back soon to see a sample of our postcard.
