SAFARI NEWS

Classroom Discipline

In our classroom, students are expected to be respectful of each other. We will have many lessons at the beginning of the year about what it means to be respectful.

Classroom rules will be taught during the first few weeks of school. Students will participate in both examples and non-examples of these rules to ensure that all students understand the expectations.

Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible

As a visual in or classroom, there will be a behavior chart. Students will begin with a numbered card in a pocket. They usually get at least one verbal warning before they have to "turn" their card. (The reverse side says Oops! Check your choices!) If they continue to make poor choices, they must put up a ticket. Each ticket represents the poor choice that has been made and is reported daily on their behavior chart. Each ticket results in 5 minutes of laps during recess. If poor choices are continually being made, a phone call is made or a note goes home. (The same behavior as the warning does not have to be exhibited before any of the other shapes are added.)

At the end of the day, we will fill in a behavior chart that is in the SAFARI Notebook. This chart will let you know how your child did that day. The goal is to have a stamp every day! If their card was turned over for a warning, the behavior chart will indicate that a warning was given. If after the warning, the inappropriate behaviors continued, the inappropriate behavior/s will be indicated with a number. The following is a key for these numbers:
1. Disrespectful.
2. Slow to obey or follow directions.
3. Being too noisy or talkative.
4. Touching/Bothering other people or things.
5. Being out of his/her learning area.

Please check this chart daily and sign each week to indicate that you have reviewed this chart with your child. This is the best form of communication. You may write a note in the parent communication section of the SAFARI Notebook at any time if you have questions.
